The Photographic Resistance of Visual Historian Corky Lee

Amelia Eng’s project dives into the rich story of Asian American photographer Young Kwok “Corky” Lee. It investigates his profound influence on social movements rising in NYC’s Chinatown during the mid-to-late 1900s, and how his legacy carries well into the 21st century. This archive utilizes a myriad of Corky Lee’s own photographs as key primary sources, and studies how they are an artifact of the time period interacting with his mission to fight injustices against the AAPI community. With the blending of broader historical context pertaining to Asian immigration policy and acts of anti-Asian violence, this exhibit aims to illustrate the extraordinary life of Corky Lee and his unique method of artistic resistance.
